Nigeria President and the presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the forthcoming presidential election, Muhammadu Buhari has drawn criticism from many over his comment to “shoot on sight” ballot box snatchers during elections.
Among those who recently condemned the President’s statement are Senator Shehu Sani and the Speaker of House of Representativese, Yakubu Dogara.
Giving a stern warning to ballot box snatchers during APC caucus meeting on Monday in Abuja, the president gave order to the military and police to be ruthless with such people and take their lives.
President Buhari said: “I really gave the military and police order to be ruthless… Anybody who thinks he has enough influence in his locality to lead a body of thugs to snatch ballot boxes or disturbs the voting system, will do so at the expense of his own life.”
In his reaction in a couple of tweet, Sani wrote: “The temptation to create an emergency or an exigency, in order to abandon the rule of law, is always in the heart of those in whom tyranny is the ultimate appeal.
“Those who attempt to snatch or snatched Ballot Boxes should be arrested and brought to book; This is a better expression to avoid jungle justice or Licence for disorder by thugs who may take the law into their hands.”
Also, Dogara expressed concern on the turn of the country’s democracy, he stated the message below on his official to Twitter handle.
“This clearly indicate that our democracy has become the victim of a full blown dictatorship. A democratically elected President would give a directive that is in clear violation of the laws of the land.”
