For about a month now, Kogi State has been witnessing incessant cases of kidnapping which is becoming unprecedented in the history of the state.
The state is currently witnessing a fair share of the ugly turn of crime in the country which has established kidnapping as the most lucrative of all, but if nothing is done to stem the tide soonest, the state will start witnessing far more than a fair share of the nefarious act.
Taking a survey of Okun area of Kogi West as case study, ACEGIST observed that at no time in the history of the area has kidnapping been so rampant.
The many cases recorded in the past month in the area have thrown many in a state of confusion, wondering who the next victim would be.
The more confused part, according to ACEGIST investigation, is the randomness by which people are kidnapped.
Some of the cases investigated showed that while some were kidnapped on transit, some were picked in their houses and some, in the farm. Also, while some were attacked while journeying in a car, some were on a motorcycle.
For example, a case of a young man who is rounding off his Higher National Diploma programme in Kogi State polytechnic, Lokoja, was invited for a church programme in his fellowship in the school late last month. On his way to the programme with his motorcycle, he was accosted by the men of the underworld who kidnapped him and later released him on ransom.
Almost within the same period, a man and his fiancée were kidnapped along Aiyetoro-Gbedde/Kabba road in their car.
Few days later, a woman producing bread bounce was attacked and kidnapped in her house in Kabba.
Just when the news of her kidnap was beginning to die off, another kidnapping news resonated, this time around, a pastor working in his farm in the Bunu axis of Kabba/Bunu local government area.
And just when thanksgiving prayer is still being held for the released of the kidnapped pastor, the latest kidnapping case in the area which is currently ruffling the feathers of security agencies occurred.
It was Monday, April 16, 2019 and it was ‘the market day’ of Lokoja international market. Such special Lokoja (Kogi State capital) market days attracts traders from around the city who either go to buy things for sale or go to sell their products or do both.
The four occupants of a commercial bus from Aiyetoro-Gbedde of Ijumu Local Government Area were on a mission for this routine but their mission was surprisingly aborted by these untamed men of the underworld.
The occupants of the car and the driver were having a jolly ride on the ‘work in progress’ Kabba – Obajana road until just a little before the globally known Dangote Cement Company, Obajana. The bus was stopped with the aid of a mounted road block and the five occupants of the bus whisked away.
As at the time of writing this article, their lives are still at the mercy of the kidnappers.
These are just a few of the almost daily kidnapping cases in the Okun district of Kogi West.
We can only hope that the relevant authorities will step up their game to not only apprehend these menacing perpetrators of this hideous act, but also come up with ingenious idea of putting an end to it.
