Controversy has trailed a portion of President Muhammadu Buhari’s statement on the review of workers wage who are already earning above the new minimum wage and Senator Shehu Sani has made his input.
While inaugurating the Technical Advisory Committee on the implementation of the new minimum wage on Wednesday, President Buhari had stated that after passing the new minimum wage into law, negotiations will be made for the review of the workers salary already receiving above the new minimum wage.
In him words: “However, we anticipate that after the new minimum wage has been passed into law we will be going into negotiations for salary review for all the workers who are already earning above the new minimum wage. It is therefore important that we are properly prepared to meet these demands.”
It will be noted that some establishment, e.g, FIRS, NCC, and many others, going by their salary scales, are currently receiving above N30,000 as minimum wage.
While the President did not specify the manner of review that will be made for such category, many have read different meaning to it.
While some said the salaries of such category will be slashed down, some say their salaries will be left untouched, which will mean them not receiving extra from the new minimum, hence, a means of harmonising workers salaries.
Senator Sani, has also made his own contribution on his twitter page which came as a warning.
“To review the wages of one in other to increase the wages of the other is to rob Peter in order to pay paul,” Sani said.
